Design Weaves | 2. We are continuing posts devoted to design and weaving with one of the most influential textile designers of the 18th century - and very few women to forge a design career at the time - Anna Maria Garthwaite. Born in Leicester in 1688, the daughter of a vicar, Anna Maria was in her early forties when she moved to Spitalfields, the heart of London's silk industry, with her widowed sister Mary intent on establishing herself as a designer of patterns for nearby silk weavers. The sisters settled into a new home on Princes Street (now named Princelet Street) where Anna Maria opened a studio. Silk designers were highly skilled, and Anna Maria was an unusual addition to their ranks, not only because of her gender, but her nationality. Most of her peers descended from the Hugenot weavers who had fled from France to Britain in the late 17th century. As Zara Anishanslin explains in an excellent essay on Anna Maria in the blog Spitalfields Life, she was also atypical in coming from a genteel background, rather than from a family of textile workers. Yet she swiftly became a respected and prolific designer, who produced over a thousand patterns for woven silks in the thirty years after her arrival in Spitalfields. Almost all of Anna Maria's designs were floral patterns (the Spitalfields weavers' speciality) although her flowers won praise for their accuracy thanks to her careful studies of botanical illustrations and the exotic flowers and plants from Africa and the Americas in the Chelsea Physic Garden.
